Stabilizing Ikea table

Post by johnswenson1 »

I decided to go with the Ikea table that was mentioned here. After getting it all put together I realized I had a problem, it was rocking. My "lab" is in a bedroom with carpet, the table just rocked back and forth on the carpet.

My solution was to get a 2x4 piece of plywood, cut it to the same size as the table top and put speaker spikes on one side. They are designed to pierce carpet so speakers don't rock, works great for tables as well.

To tie the table to the plywood I added a bunch of screw eyes to the other side of the plywood and the bottom of the table and used adjustable bungee cords to make trusses with the legs. To make the whole thing very steady I added a concrete block (about 30 pounds (to you Brits, that is weight not money)) sitting on the piece of plywood.

The whole thing is now very stable and rigid, a good platform for the placer.
