In kits shipped in May 2023 or later, the steel plates are stainless steel and this step is unnecessary. On earlier kits, the plates are zinc coated, which protects them from rusting. However, the laser cut edges are not protected, and they might rust. It would not affect performance, but if a slighty blemised appearance bothers you, take a paint pen around the edges.
