Re: A-axis thermal runaway
Would be nice to play with the L6470, I've seen it mentioned before. All the low end control boards I've seen use Allegro or TI drivers. The only board I've seen supporting it is the "BAM&DICE" design, https://www.2printbeta.de/Electronics/Controller/BAM-DICE-Arduino-STK-kit::328.html....

Re: concentric non-captive shafts for Z+A axes?
There's probably a way to do something similar with the Z+X axis motors and again with the X+Y motors by using multiple "interfering" timing belts -- ultimately resulting in a machine where none of the motors move at all (like a Kossel/Delta machine), but the price paid is a very complica...

Re: PNP feeder block -- highly recommended
Ok, having being inspired and encouraged, I have reworked my feeder module with the 28byj-48 steppers. I can also put all the electronics on that board also, simplifying the design a lot.

Re: PNP feeder block -- highly recommended
Oh, that is really neat, I like it :) Of course, multiplex the output stage, I should have thought of that! I also realise now I could put hole detectors in series, as only one tape will be moving. One small micro could control a lot of feeders. I guess you have some idlers to guide the tape to the ...

Re: PNP feeder block -- highly recommended
Seems we are thinking along similar lines. One reason I wanted a faster motor was so that a feed module could be more easily integrated to PNP software. I intend to have a push switch on the feeder, so it can be actuated manually or with a probe on the head unit, without requiring a comms link. This...

Re: PNP feeder block -- highly recommended
I saw that block and was quite interested, but before dropping $150 on it I was keen to see more specs, e.g. what dimensions, number and type of lanes. Hard to tell from the small picture. I am also looking at a Volker Besmen type feeder. I decided that the most critical part was the final delivery ...

Re: Use GRBL instead of TinyG
Yay! Finally got 3 axes working ok with Tinyg2, cheap Due clone from ebay, and a RAMPS-FD v2. I tried a RAMPS-FD v1 from ebay, I had some suspicions about it so I swapped the board. I wrote some C# to do some basic commands to Tinyg2, I then realised that Liteplacer already has most of the same func...

Re: Add-ons: feeders
I looked at your design and one thing I noticed: I can't give enough credit to Volker Besmens, which my design is derived from! http://i.imgur.com/oGk5BWB.png This would work fine with the thick paper reels, but with simple plastic reals would the switch resistance not be to much (tape will flex) ?...

Re: Add-ons: feeders
Btw, optical sensing of holes doesn't really work for transparent tapes. Actually, it does, the tape is not transparent enough. Here is what the camera sees: Ah, I was thinking of simple photodiode/transistor type detector there. But I am impressed with the capabilities of the vision system though,...

Re: Add-ons: feeders
I have seen most of those before, except the protovoltaics one. The thing that strikes me is that they are all quite complicated. That means expensive. In that case, why not just buy second hand feeders off ebay? You can get single feeders for £20, less if you buy a job lot. They are a bit worn, but...
