Is it only possible to use one loose part at a time?
The machine has to halt and ask user to place component underneath camera?

With the current software, yes. The reason is that it is difficult to impossible to find parameters that reliably see one component as one piece, considering the vast variance of component appearances. The software doesn't know if it is seeing two smaller components or one component with a shadow in the middle, so it is much more reliable to assume there is only one component.

I would think that if you assign a +Y or +X and an pitch of each part from each other, it would just keep looking for more parts.
Just like if they were in a tape, except components would be on a loose parts tray.
