Neat article! Makes me wonder if that effect can be exploited to get extremely accurate correlation between the video stream frames and the TinyG's internal timers.

Not sure - I just assumed that they coded the firmware in Arduino to have less redundancy with grblShield and the like?
It is not correct. The TinyG firmware is actually very clean in that respect, it builds with nothing more than avr-gcc and no external dependencies. A really refreshing encounter.
