I too found some nozzles required more force than others, but they do seem to be loosening up with use.

I'm only guessing, but there could be an FSR under the block (like this

looking at the curve in the datasheet, the values for 100g force (block only) and 120g (block but small force) would be 6kOhm and 3kOhm respectively, quite easily sensed.
I just don't know what the response times are of the sensors. given you are only looking for a sharp decrease in resistance, you don't really need to wait for the sensor to settle.

I think it's likely the sensing is built into the head / nozzle system. The metal block just presents a known height. If you watch the video, the machine is sensing three different heights: feeder height, part height and board height. It could only do part height if the sensing was built into the metal block.

That's what I thought as well. Would be interesting how exactly they do it...
Juha's system with double linear movement works OK but consumes a lot of space. I am still looking for a nice way to integrate into the nozzle adapter itself.
