Altium Library - how do you separate your footprints

I'm in the middle of rebuilding my altium dblib, the old one was getting pretty unmanaged after about 5 years of "get it done fast" additions - so i'm rebuilding this from scratch, redoing every footprint and model. I'm at about 8300 parts now with a couple of hundred footprints (its amazing how much a sot-23-3 can vary between every. single. manufacturer. sigh) I've been working on it for a few months now and starting to get to the point that I can almost use it!
But I'm worried about footprints starting to get out of hand... so I'm curious how other people break up their footprints in their Altium libraries, do you split them into pcblibs by type, by manufacturer, purpose? I'm sure there has to be a "good way" to do it thats easy to manage and easy to find things in too.
