In case anyone else has the same issue I had -
When connecting the device, it seemed like it connected but nothing would happen. I installed the recommended FTDI driver, and when I connected, it added a 'usb serial converter' device under univeral serial bus controllers. right click on that, go to properties, advanced, and select load vcp. then unplug and replug it in -- the serial port is then added after this is enabled.

Thank you for debugging this for me! I have run the software on three machines, and on all of them, it just worked. May I ask what Windows version you are using?

Noted. None of my machines have that. Besides, living in an engineering environment, might have acquired an updated driver from somewhere else already. I added your explanation and a link to the drivers on the setup instructions. Thank you for this!
