I've been thinking about the diffuser on the downward camera. Image quality is typically poor on anything reflective / glossy, e.g. OSHPark boards, largely irrelevant of the amount of diffusion applied.
For example, tried multiple diffusers and paper and all don't provide a good image.
However the solution seems to be simple, if the diffuser is in the same axis as the camera, then a reflection will be seen of the diffuser. Tilt the board at 45 degree, and the reflection is no longer seen
by the camera.
A diffuse lighting system set to illuminate off axis, 30-45 degrees seems to be enough.
Anybody done this?

I came across this site http://www.cognex.com/ExploreLearn/Usef ... ngAdvisor/ while researching a P&P machine, I can't remember where I found the link. It certainly seems to support your suggestion.
I haven't gotten my machine up and running yet (on to the electrical wiring today, what joy ) but will probably be looking into this if needed.
